JOYOUS
It has been a wonderful experience to get to know the local businesses and cafes that stock and serve HOST and many have become friends. I deliver coffee to local trade partners in re-useable buckets which get picked up empty + switched for ones full of beans. All our retail bags are recyclable.
It has been great getting to know the ethical importers, tasting samples, ordering in the 70kg sacks and lugging them comically into position at the roastery. I love what I do - it gives me a real buzz to be part of so many people’s mornings. I feel super lucky to live + work on the South Coast, the sea is just a mile down the road so deliveries are often followed by a visit to the beach for a walk or a swim.
In 2022 a dream realised was to visit Colombia. It was extraordinary to wake up to a view of coffee plants, interspersed with enormous banana leaf green foliage and see tiny iridescent hummingbirds flit from flower to flower to the soundtrack of a faraway waterfall. We were shown the different varietals such as pink bourbon and geisha, walked the near vertical inclines and popped the cherry fruit to reveal the slime-covered coffee seeds with a fruity fresh taste like a diminutive lychee. We cupped oodles of coffees, rode around the dirt roads clinging to the bars of an open-top jeep and met the small producing farmers who work the land to make this wonderful product that we all love to sip to get our days off to a good start.
